Books & collection evaluations

Tell us what you have.

Whether you have one unusual book, several boxes, a longtime personal library, or an estate collection, contact Kansas Book Depository before you sort, move, donate, or discard anything.

You do not need to know what the books are worth or decide which ones matter. We will evaluate what you have and help determine the most practical next step.

The process

Getting started should be easy.

Step 1

Contact us

Call, email, or send the short form. Tell us where the books are and roughly how many you have. If photographs are difficult, just call us.

Step 2

Show us a few photographs.

Text or email an overall view of what you have—whether individual books, shelves, or boxes—plus a few closer photographs with readable titles. You do not need to photograph every book.

Step 3

We’ll recommend the next step.

We may ask for another photograph, arrange an appointment, make a house call, discuss a purchase, or suggest another option.

Photos that help us

A few clear photographs are enough to begin.

You do not need to photograph every book. A few clear overview and sample photographs are usually enough.

Shelves of varied books in a private home library.

The whole collection

A wide photograph of the shelves, room, boxes, or group of books helps us understand the size and character of the collection.

A box of books arranged with the spines and titles facing upward

Readable book spines

Photograph shelves straight on, or place books in a box with their spines facing upward. We need to be able to read some titles.

A book title page showing the title, author, publisher, and a handwritten signature

Title page and signature

For a book that seems old, unusual, signed, or finely made, show the title page and any signature or inscription.

A copyright page showing publication details and ISBN numbers

Publication details

Include the copyright or publication page so we can see the date, publisher, edition information, and other identifying details.

House calls

Best of all, there is no heavy lifting.

For appropriate collections, we visit homes, offices, storage spaces, and estates.

House calls are available throughout Kansas and the surrounding region by arrangement. Travel decisions depend upon the size, nature, and circumstances of the collection.

If bringing selected books to us makes more sense, we can arrange to meet you at our offices at Kansas Book Depository in Overland Park. All visits are by appointment.

Possible next steps

  • Discuss purchasing all or part of the collection
  • Accept selected books or printed material for rehoming
  • Arrange or help coordinate removal
  • Recommend another appropriate destination or practical option

Short evaluation form

Send us a short message.

You do not need to make a list or photograph every book. Send us a short message and a few pictures. We will review them and tell you what to do next.

Prefer to talk?
Call or text (913) 777-4337.

Add up to six photographs, with a combined size under 20 MB. A wide view of the shelves or boxes and a few closer pictures of readable book spines are enough.

If photographs are difficult, skip them and call us. You never need to complete a technical task before we will talk with you.
